At the Lister Hospital, I used my vast knowledge and experience to improve the quality and service offered to patients. I stabilised a department with significant discord reducing staff turnover and implementing staff training and development. I increased productivity through increasing the ITU form five to seven days a week and sort funding to fully equip the unit with the most up to date equipment and improve the level of care received by all patients. I negotiated with senior board members for increased budget highlighting the importance of the department and the necessity for this new technology. I was also responsible for sourcing products within a very tight budget and ensuring all staff were trained to be able to use it. I was also advisor to the Head of planning and Administration and organised the first Critical Care Exhibition at the Postgraduate Centre in 1993.

I led a five sister team, leading and implementing training on staff training and development. I helped to commission a seven bedded ITU and CCU and introduced departmental operating procedures, acting as the Nursing officer and implementation specialist for these units. I undertook considerable research and advanced cost-benefit analysis to find suitable portable ventilators to aid critically ill patients whilst in transportation to specialist hospitals. I was also part of the team involved in modifying the Deep Body Thermometer, which is now known as the ‘Lister Type’.

I personally commissioned a four bed Intensive Therapy Unit within the surgical ward and coordinated the staff and service training. Working directly with the Nursing officer I was able to improve patient care and efficiency whilst reducing costs. I also accompanied the consultant surgeon on clinical teaching and research in general vascular surgery and trauma as well as Orthopaedic surgery.
