I am currently working as a patent consultant, helping individuals and companies develop patent strategies, draft and prosecute new patent applications, and helping manage their outside counsel costs. I do a wide range of mechanical, electro-mechanical and computer related technologies. I charge a competitive rate for my time, or a fixed fee for individual projects. I worked briefly for this exciting joint venture (between Google and J&J) company as they work in the field of robotic surgery. I handled a large volume of contract drafting and review and coordinated a massive legal research project. I also conducted various invention review and brainstorming sessions for the organization.

I managed a patent case docket of over 700+ cases. My work involved maintaining the timely prosecution of all these cases by overseeing the actions of over 20 law firms, reviewing office actions and responses, and making recommendations to management on the handling of the cases. I had direct oversight on the budget for all the cases I managed and often negotiated with firms to manage costs. I contributed to regular invention review sessions, providing input to a business team on the likelihood of obtaining patent protection on a large body of technical areas. Many of the cases were in the life sciences, but I also reviewed ideas and patent applications in many unrelated disciplines. I contributed to the patent strategies and development of numerous start-up companies as they were being spun-out of IV.

I worked for GDS under a 1 year contract to provide General and IP counsel for this small medtech company. I conducted inventor reviews and brainstorming sessions for the company. I provided legal analysis of a variety of patent and corporate law issues. I worked closely with the research and development team to develop new IP, and also mine existing IP for potential new applications. I worked with the senior staff on a variety of issues for the organization and also made periodic presentations to the Board. My duties included a performance based bonus plan, and I met all the milestones of the plan. I was admitted to the CA in-house counsel program while working for GDS.

I worked at LipoSonix, Inc., as one of the original members of the senior staff. I devised the IP strategy for the organization and drafted all original applications of the Company. I managed our outside IP counsel and coordinated with them for every office action and response for our patent cases. I also managed the company side of a foreign trademark action which we won. LipoSonix was acquired by Medicis Pharmaceuticals in a $300 million deal (LipoSonix became Medicis Technologies Corp). I stayed on with the company continuing as patent counsel. I had a few additional duties after the acquisition which mainly comprised coordinating legal activity with the parent company, and managing compliance matters. I worked with the parent company Chief IP counsel and adapted our portfolio strategy to accommodate new strategies for the combined organization.

I joined SonoSite shortly after the company was spun out from ATL. I devised the early patent strategy for the company and drafted most of the early patents for the organization. I managed the patent docket and oversaw the work of our outside IP counsel. I conducted invention review meetings and performed analysis on idea submissions. I provided patent recommendations to senior engineering and marketing executives. I conducted due diligence on several patent estates the company was interested in purchasing, and provided my findings and recommendations to the senior staff.I managed an e-discovery search during a patent litigation, and provided cost control recommendations to senior staff during the litigation (my recommendations were adopted, and saved the company a lot of money).An undisclosed number of patents were used successfully in a litigation against GE (GE settled and agreed to pay an undisclosed license fee to SonoSite). SonoSite was later acquired by Fuji Films.
