Being the new guy leading a group of associates that have been their longer than you is challenging, it’s not impossible to bring them around to your style of managing but it first starts with trust and respect. Start off slow to let the associates get comfortable with you before you get into the nitty gritty of your expectations. Jumping in too fast can cause the associates to feel resentment and dissatisfaction with the job. This will cause low morale and pour performance.The second most important thing is associate appreciation. If associates feel appreciated then they are more likely to buy in to your expectations. This leads to higher morale and better job performance.There is one more thing that builds a strong team and it is attitude. Your associates will take ques from the attitude you bring to work. You should always bring a positive attitude even if you’re not having a positive attitude day. Even the poorest attitude employee will eventually come around and mirror your positive attitude. Everyone hates a stickler for a boss but that doesn’t mean you can’t be firm in your expectations as long as you have their trust and respect. I found this management style over the years has exceeded expectations in building great teams.
