See www.gpplus.comCopy of part of Nomination for FRCP earlier in 2024:Dr Copp was fundamental in bringing cardiac CT scanning to Scotland. His pioneering work ultimately led to the formation of Edinburgh Imaging, and the subsequent world-leading trials on the value of CT for individuals with coronary disease. Peter obtained a grant of £5M to purchase the first dedicated cardiac CT scanner in Scotland, and now Edinburgh is a global leader in this field, and this leadership is built on the imagination, enthusiasm and persistence of Dr Copp who drove cardiac CT from its infancy to its current position as standard, crucial care.As a trainee GP, Peter won a national award for his research during his traineeship.In the days before cytokine suppression for autoimmune disease, cancer, infections and of course COVID became standard practice, Dr Copp pioneered the use of Azithromycin in this role. Interaction with Oxford University followed, and the subsequent major trials which addressed this crucial question (e.g., RECOVERY in COVID) showed that Dr Copp was right. Peter was not included on the author lists, although his examples of the success of immune suppression were fundamental to their hypothesis that such a treatment strategy might work.Peter also wrote an important chapter in my own textbook, "Professor A. Brady, Hyperlipidaemia and Hypertension - The Call for New Management Strategies (3rd ed., 2005)"Peter is a brilliant teacher, and was much loved by his medical students. Dr Copp was on the honorary staff at Edinburgh University Medical School for years. Over more recent times Dr Copp has concentrated on clinical excellence as a national expert general physician, with a Scotland-wide referral practice.As above, Dr Copp made major contributions to the training of Edinburgh University medical students with his programme of rheumatological teaching. Originally recruited by Prof George Nuki, Peter taught for 15 years in the Rheumatology Department at the Western General Hospital, and his teaching sessions were highly sought after.Dr Copp has pioneered and driven change in a number of vital areas of medicine. I believe Peter's work to bring cardiac CT to Scotland will remain as perhaps his most important and sustained contribution. His excellence as a diagnostician and physician are recognised across Scotland with referrals from every district in our nation. Dr Copp is recognised as one of our top physicians and I belive Peter is worthy of Fellowship of our College.

Total of 9 years at an extremely busy NHS Health Centre with 5 minute appointment allocations. Vast experience of family medicine and biopsychosocial impacts of drugs, alcohol, poverty and joblessness in a once proud coal mining town. Being a Scot (or half Scot), I am perhaps a bit hesitant to 'blow my own trumpet', but which the younger professionals out there don't seem to hesitate to do so. Brave New World. I am also very fortunate not to be looking for even more work, but nevertheless keen to support my younger colleagues develop their own meaningful, effective and linear (dually highly satisfactory) long-term D/P relationships to last well beyond my tenure. Apart from my exposure to private work in Bermuda/NZ/Australia and Cayman Islands to name a few: the seminal work done by the local Professor of General Practice (the much venerated John Howie) was when he and his colleagues wanted to take a look at "quality" in GP and published a series of papers starting with BMJ (Vol 319 :18/09/99) and writing to me in Dec the year before and pointing out I had the highest patient enablement index (PEI), within the study group of 22 GPs in 4 regions across UK (Oxford, Coventry, West London and Edinburgh/Lothians) and involving over 30K consults and I had highest PEI at 5.6. An 'outlier' in the bell curve. He phoned me as he was curious (in an avuncular way) as to "what is it YOU do in there for under 10 mins?". I do what I still do today. But I profoundly realised back then, I could not maintain a certain level of personal and high quality service within the organisational framwork my contract was linked to. A bit of burnout also helped catalyse my decsion to create a job structure to be the GP I was so thorougly well trained to be. "GP Plus" was born. And trademarked. A level of selfishness, maybe. But being realistic and honest were paramount. I still love each new day and what the challenges will be, with 25 years having elapsed. Baptised in Dalkeith.
