For the past 5 years I have been a workhorse for the United States Submarine Service. I have maintained electrical equipment, operated underwater SONAR systems on 2 Western Pacific deployments, put in thousands of hours of security and safety watches, been the Deck Division Leading Petty Officer and Repair Parts Petty Officer, recorded 20+ coworkers' qualifications in their specific fields, and honestly I do not want to know the high number of hours I've spent painting, cleaning, waxing and preserving the ship both topside and below decks. In my 5 years in, I've found an important skill and that is finding the balance between keeping a high standard of work and being a cohesive member of the team. I've spent more time underwater without sunlight than I have in port under the sun during my naval service, and I think this fact has greatly contributed to my constant optimism at work. I truly doubt there are many jobs out there that will intimidate me compared to a submarine, and I'd be interested to find one that would. I like hard work, I am comfortable with being uncomfortable, and I know I am that worker that is motivated to put 100% effort into that job nobody else wants to do everyday.
