Ignore the bright red telephone receiver plugged into his iPhone. Pete believes in communicating the old-fashioned way; face-to-face. He calls his management style MBWA, Management By Walking Around. (“You’d be surprised at how often you get feedback.”) But don’t be fooled. Whether he’s negotiating freight rates from Spain or China; trouble-shooting new agreements; orchestrating a price list; overseeing invoices, commissions, and computer issues; or writing the employee handbook, Pete’s on it.Officially he describes his job as 60% administration and 40% operational but unofficially, he says, “You roll up your sleeves and do what you have to do.” Not that he’s about going it alone: “Once you have teamwork and communication that’s 80% of it. The rest will take care of itself.”His experience purchasing inventory for $100million of business at an $8billion company paved the way to Global Lighting. But Pete’s attributes are owned, not earned. The confidence in himself and his team speaks volumes. “I’m training my replacement by example,” he says. “I believe in complementing loudly and publicly, and criticizing quietly and privately.” Case in point are the employee reviews recently initiated within Global Lighting’s intimate environment: as opposed to being exercises in finger-pointing, Pete looks at reviews as giving people goals they can be rewarded for. “I want people to feel they’re owed a review,” he explains. “I really believe people want to be better.”
