The… Show more The Australian Sustainability and Environmental Action program based at Byron Bay in NSW, is designed to empower university students of different majors committed to making a positive contribution in building more sustainable societies. Students gain critical knowledge necessary to make informed judgments about environmental issues. They learn how to apply the principles of sustainability, not only in their personal lives, but in any career they choose, from accounting to fine arts. The program is based on the philosophy that environmental issues, such as global climate change, are so important in today’s world that all students should be ecologically literate. Typically, just over half of the students on the program are environmental studies majors; the program also draws students from diverse fields such as fine arts, business, sociology, anthropology, economics, and political science who are inspired to believe they can make a difference and are motivated to act on environmental challenges. The program includes numerous field excursions and workshops with leading practitioners, academics, and Aboriginal elders in extraordinary settings.. Learning is conducted within remote wilderness areas, national parks, and onsite sustainable housing projects. Students visit Foresthaven Environmental Learning & Retreat Centre in Maclean NSW to explore deep ecology, eco-philosophy and experience first hand sustainable housing and living in action, including 25 years of rainforest regeneration & Permaculture. Our current focus of discourse & collaborative action includes:* Defining & promoting resilient communities in the face of climate change and natural disasters, providing healthy living environments with relationships with nature and secure food production. * More comprehensively describing qualities of human settlements that, by design and governance, enhance people as human beings and contributors to resilient communities, including child and youth friendly cities. * Establishing a sustainable framework for managing and investing in physical assets including natural and cultural assets. * Linking to UN Habitat’s new Resilient Communities Campaign, the UN Habitat Rights to the City (R2C) agenda and other relevant global initiatives, drawing on leading contemporary Australian experience in seeking reconciliation with indigenous peoples and proper accommodation of migrants and refugees. We are committed to working with UN Habitat and key agencies as a contributor in crafting the new Global Urban Agenda and implementing the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
