About Peter Downes
Formerly director of macroeconomic modelling at the OECD responsible for coordinating the OECD Economic Outlook projections and providing analysis to the Economic Policy Committee.Prior to that worked at the Australian Treasury in forecasting and policy areas - head of the modelling area from 1994 to 2001 - oversaw the public release of the TRYM model in 1996. As acting head of the Macroeconomic Policy Division in 1996 helped to formalize RBA independence and targets (Treasurer's agreement with the Governor), and the fiscal policy framework enacted in the Charter of Budget Honesty 1998. Involved in the modelling of the impacts of the Asian Financial Crisis 1998-99, and the introduction of the GST 2000.Worked on the Fitzgerald Report on National Saving 1992, and the Prime Minister's Committee on Employment Opportunities 1993 Green Paper "Restoring Full Employment".Involvement with the IPCC on economic projections and modelling (2005 Experts Meeting in Washington), and the Garnaut and Treasury climate change reviews.
