Wapato School District

I worked to establish and expand a broad-based substance abuse prevention coalition in the Wapato community. This entailed developing and implementing a strategic plan tailored to Wapato's needs. The coalition works to deliver evidence based environmental, public awareness, direct service and capacity building strategies in the community with the goal of preventing youth substance abuse and promoting healthy lifestyles. As a community coordinator, I served as staff to facilitate the functions of the coalition. This included recruiting and retaining coalition members, training coalition members on prevention science and coordinating budget review by coalition members.

Yakima, Washington Area

I fostered a culture of college and career readiness at the middle school level. My primary responsibilities were delivering a nine-lesson curriculum to 240 students over the course of the year and ensuring that eligible pupils signed up for the College Bound scholarship before the end of their eighth grade year. I also worked with educational service providers in an auxiliary capacity to support a local culture of high expectations and outcomes amongst young people.

Ukraine

I worked at a school in Inhulets Ukraine where I developed and implemented curricula relating to promoting healthy lifestyles, preparing youth for the world of work and promoting civic engagement. I oversaw three different youth clubs and worked with adults seeking to improve their English. During the summer I worked at summer camps with Ukrainian youth and teachers to help them with their English and Leadership capabilities.

I lead a media campaign to raise awareness of the importance of completing the FAFSA and about www.thewashboard.org a scholarship resource in Washington State. Sign-ups for thewashboard.org in the Yakima area increased dramatically from 11% to 45% and not a single school had a sign-up percentage below 25% whereas the previous year not one had a sign-up rate above 20%.

I worked for the College Success Foundation in Yakima at two local High Schools. I assisted the in-school College Preparatory Advisors with filing, mailings, answering calls, and advising students.

I was part of a small team which inspected all of the known mosquito breeding sites in the district and treated for mosquito larvae when we encountered them. We were also tasked with uncovering any possible sources of mosquito breeding so I also partook in exploration of the district.
