Hello! I am Peter Engels, a Linux System Administrator for USGS/EROS. I have three years of hands-on experience resolving security vulnerabilities and administering Linux and Windows. Most of my time at work is spent either identifying and remediating security vulnerabilities or creating automation to strengthen our infrastructure. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Network Security and Administration from Dakota State University, and as of October 2021, I am working on a Master's of Science in Cyber Security and Information Assurance from Western Governor's University. I thoroughly document any code I write and any procedures I develop. I follow best practices for all the automation I create. I am proficient in Python and Bash. I primarily use Python and Ansible for automation, including automation of all my project's host-based firewalls. I automated quarterly data calls for hundreds of machines, reducing days of work to minutes. I automated system list generation for the Security team at EROS, resulting in more accurate asset generation. I automated monitoring of thousands of data points, including mount monitoring and firewall changes, allowing for automatic actions to resolve issues as soon as they arise. Finally, I automated reporting on vulnerabilities, including notification of vulnerabilities that were older than the allowed threshold and notification of vulnerabilities that likely would need special attention. I enjoy security work and creative work. I enjoy working with computers, since they're the closest to magic that we'll ever get. If you have a job offer for me, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for your time.
