GREEN MODEL® was initially a ‘venture’ capital business unit within FNB from late 2004 onwards receiving FNB Innovation awards in 2007 (3rd overall) and 2008 (category winner)It extended IP first developed at The National Insurance Company of NZ and Aegis Insurance RSAThe venture was to develop the concept of the ‘Universal Sub Ledger’ and apply it to ‘reporting’ in the bank. • Financial reporting • Regulatory reporting • Management reporting • Other Stakeholder reporting GREEN MODEL® utilised a clever Universal sub Ledger® mechanism that seamlessly connected business systems i.e. transactional, mortgage and card systems etc to the general ledger. It consisted of multiple integrated sub ledgers posting to control accounts in the general ledger that then permitted the presentation of quality guaranteed business information through other media whilst retaining the referential integrity to the ledger. It was based on new business thinking and designed from scratch without constraints of past solutions and allowed the reengineering of the bank’s financial and business information spanning multiple large volumes and complex legacy customer systems across multiple Southern African countries serviced by the FNB franchise.Powered by modern hardware and software that allowed for growth, it was flexible to business requirements, extendable with new data and rich in attributes which allowed for any perspective (customer, manager, finance, stakeholder, etc) on the data to be created through the consistent application of business rules. The ‘business’ could then apply information presented, to decision making, without having to first interpret the data or guess or apply assumptions due to missing data. It therefore enabled profitable and informed business decisions to be made, based on trusted information obtained from a reliable and robust daily end to end process. The solution has been in regular daily use in FNB SA and its African operations since 2007.
