Management of the Planning and Design Division, comprising 332 permanent staff and up to 107 contractors with locations across the 5 mainland Capital Cities. I was accountable for the on time delivery of all Network Design Documents for the access and transit network build, the consolidation of the Design activities into a single organisation and the change of the delivery model to improve overall cycle time performance of fibre access designs. I provided ongoing representation for NBN Co. at the various meetings that co-ordinated the implementation of the Infrastructure Supply Agreement with Telstra. I maintained accountability for the Business Ownership of the NBN Co. geo-spatial systems and Address Management as a function across NBN Co. and chaired the various forums to manage their end to end business requirements.

I created the Planning & Design department to deliver Australia’s largest infrastructure project, starting from zero staff. I provided the structure to allocate geographic areas to Fibre, Wireless and Satellite and provided the initial Fibre to the Premises design for the First Release Sites, as well as managing the project to construct these first five sites. I provided the leadership to a small team of technical experts engaged in the initial design and engineering of the NBN Co. network as well as the vision to grow the team to provide the designs required for the Fibre, Wireless and Transit Networks to satisfy the 10 year implementation timescale. I provided the technical leadership for the infrastructure elements of the Definitive Agreements between Telstra and NBN Co, a $9 Billion agreement. I had accountability for the Business Ownership of the NBN Co. geo-spatial systems and Address Management as a function across NBN Co. I was instrumental in the adoption of the FOND fibre design toolset and the continual improvement in the design process for Fibre to the premises network designs.

Management of a small team of technical experts engaged in the design and engineering of the Hutchison 3G network in Australia. Management of the team during the transition to the Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) joint venture. Responsibilities included the capital planning for the network augmentation and the management of the Ericsson outsourced engineering team.

Peter Ferris was the General Manager of Technology and Planning, in the Networks Division of SingTel Optus. He held this role from February 2004 to December 2008 and was with Optus for 15 years.Peter was responsible for the selection of the technology used in the Optus Network and all of the Network Facilities, as well as the Optus Network strategic planning and architecture, focusing on the 2 to 5 year timeframe. He also held responsability for the Network Quality team, technical support for Legal and Regulatory requirements, and the Nexus Project, which had a prime focus on improving the quality and robustness of the Optus Network.

Responsible for the transmission systems and exhange infrastructure at Optus.

Designed the hierarchical fibre network to connect Business premesis for Optus.

Responsible for the process engineering, systems support and information management for all Network groups at Optus.

Introduced the Business Network Services portfolio.
