I worked with the scholarship team (15/16 years old) at Castleford Tigers RLFC by participating and co-leading mental skills workshops. These workshops entail promoting and improving the knowledge in and around mental health. From an ethical standpoint, competence, respect, responsibility, and integrity were shown throughout the placement. Secondly, communication was effective in both verbal and non-verbal by making it relatable to the lads taking part in the workshops. Myself and my team had to be strict with our time management, flexibility, and organisational skills to keep a professional, yet comfortable and engaging atmosphere. Teamwork was vital for these workshops to be planned efficiently and to be carried out professionally. Back to back workshops were carried out in set times, with educational aspects taking place, followed by practical elements.

Active Blues is a partnership, set up to encourage inactive men in poor areas to become physically active through sport. On my placement, I helped assist and lead walking football and football sessions to men from all kinds of cultures and backgrounds. Effective communication (verbally and non-verbally) was key to these sessions, as everyone did not speak English. Football was used as connector to encourage physical activity, but to also to help men socialise with others with the same interest. Being able to help aid chats with the men relaxed and made the environment comfortable to which they could all express themselves without the feeling of judgement. Having the ability to adapt to each personality and to create an easy-going atmosphere, encouraged men to keep getting out the house and keeping active.
