Peter E. Hanff retired as Deputy Director of The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, on 1 July 2021 after more than fifty years at the library. He had interned at the Library of Congress, than accepted a Rare-Book-Librarianship fellowship at Indiana University's Lilly Library in Bloomington. He was recruited by The Bancroft Library in 1970 and served as reference librarian, special assistant to the Director (during which time he managed the merger of the former Department of Special Collections into Bancroft). He then served as Coordinator of Technical Services at Bancroft until 1996, when he was named Deputy Director. In that role the Bancroft Library collection curators, and the Head of Public Services, reported to him. His background in book collecting, descriptive bibliography, and rare books and manuscripts were all relevant to his career at Bancroft.As a generalist, Hanff was invited by Professor James Casey to join him in teaching in the freshman and freshman/sophomore seminar series for undergraduates at the University. The focus of the course was research using primary sources.
