Qualified as a press-toolmaker in Denmark in 2000. I have ever since worked as a CNC machinist/Toolmaker. In my recent role in New Zealand, I was involved with many aspects of toolmaking and used to work in a precision environment. Daily, I would be programming and running the CNC machines. Would it be a CNC lathe or a CNC machine centre. While the CNC machines were running, I would perform other tasks such as, verifying tool design in SolidWorks and modifying CAD models within acceptable parameters for faster and easier machining in Siemens NX. Manual work was also a part of my days, such as manual lathe, cylindrical grinding, surface grinding or manual mill. Because of Xact Tooling Services’ customer base, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Hella Marine and Sistema, every day was filled with the expectation to perform to meet tight tolerances and quality needs. After Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns it was time to take the kids to Denmark for a 3 month period. In my role at Bovil Parts in Denmark, I worked in a production environment where we produced anything from 1 to 5000 units. Working for Bovil Parts for a three-month period, where I ran Haas DT1 and VF2 machine centers and created a toolpath in AlphaCam, has given me an insight into how mass production is run. To keep human interaction to a minimum when producing a large volume of parts, I would set up more than one fixture or machine-wise, arrange for multiple sub-programs to run, and arrange robots to feed the CNC machines. Planning for the next job is an essential aspect of my day to run the machines efficiently. Ensure tooling, fixture, material, and any issue I might find are solved before starting the job. Another area I have enjoyed is creating Macro Programs to optimise everyday tasks on the CNC’s. Taught myself the programming language Tcl to be able to modified the post processor to feed the G-code from the NX software to the CNC machines. I’ve been a committee member of the Danish Society in Penrose, Auckland, for over three years. I was in charge of organising projects and overseeing overall facility maintenance. The most enjoyable aspects of this volunteer work are the networking and knowledge I have gained. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and participating in social activities such as playing and organising soccer.I recently purchased an Adventurer 3 3D printer. Using Fusion 360 to make spare parts/items for around the house or friends, and I’m also building a router in the garage that will allow me to do personal projects in the future.
