In my role as Deputy Chief Technology Officer at Health Data Research UK (HDR UK), the UK's national institute for health data science, I am focused on the technology to unlock the potential of health data research for better patient outcomes. I help drive forward the strategy and development of technology services and infrastructure to enable the provision of consistent and meaningful research access to health data. This includes the Health Data Research Gateway, which accelerates the discovery and access request management enhancing the ethical, secure, and transparent use of health datasets and other assets. I have a particular focus on developing HDRUKs projects and partnerships that utilise and/or enhance our core technology products. This includes our key partnerships with ELIXIR, Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) and HDR UKs research driver programmes.

I lead the Genome Analysis team that utilises whole genome analyses to reveal genomic function. The team includes 25 scientists and software developers that focus on the regulatory components, core infrastructure and web applications for the Ensembl project (https://www.ensembl.org/), a world renowned browser for vertebrate genomes. I have a particular focus on developing data resources to support animal agriculture genomics and bioinformatics, looking to engage more extensively with external scientific academic and industrial collaborators. I also lead on the development of the data portal for the Darwin Tree of Life project that aims to sequence the genomes of all 70,000 species of eukaryotic organisms in Britain and Ireland.

I lead a team of bioinformaticians, data coordination engineers and software engineers to deliver data coordination and presentation solutions for scientific data resources and data coordination services. My team is part of the larger Data Coordination and Archiving team that sits within the Molecular Archive Cluster at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute. My team is responsible for the technology to present the European Nucleotide Archive (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena) to the world and to deliver data coordination and presentation services to collaborative high-throughput ‘omics projects. We also develop and maintain a range of interactive project data portals including the Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Initiative (HipSci; www.hipsci.org), the Functional Annotation of Animal Genomes project (FAANG; http://data.faang.org/) and the surveillance identification and investigation pathogens portal (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/pathogens/).

Research Department Of Genetics, Evolution And Environment

My research focuses upon the application of computational methods to both 'omic data and the study of evolution. My current research employs RNA-Seq to investigate the changes in coding sequence, expression and alternative splicing to the evolution of sexual dimorphism in birds. I have recently identified a rapid turnover of sex biased gene expression primarily through evolution of male expression levels and that the degree of sexual selection predicts the proportion of male biased genes for a clade of six land and water fowl. I am also currently studying dosage compensation, aquaculture diseases, phylogenetic methods, and brain evolution in both fish and primates.
