Profile bio

About Peter Hoebe

I work at Earthwatch Europe as the research lead on sustainable agriculture. We are using citizen science to work with communities to understand the impact of agricultural practices on the natural environment. We use these outcomes to help develop a more sustainable approach towards agricultural practices.I worked at SRUC as a plant population geneticist on the broadening of the genetic basis of different agri- and horticultural crops to look at sustainable ways of stable crop outputs. This is mostly in relation to limited nutrient input and water and drought stress but also pathogen and herbivore resistance. I use genetic resources such as landraces and wild relatives of different crops to find traits for agri- and horticultural application.Next to plant focussed projects I was involved in crop protection looking at population genetics of barley pathogen Ramularia and pine tree pathogen Dothistroma in relation to their potential for invasiveness. We used genetic variation in agri- and horticultural crop species, genetic structure in pathogen populations, sustainable management of crops and the potential of natural populations for agricultural practices.

Listed skills include Science, Agricultural Research, Data Analysis, Population Genetics, and 11 others.

Crop Research Lecturer

Edinburgh & Glasgow, United Kingdom

My interests lie mainly in the potential of pre green revolution variation in agri- and horticultural crops, sustainable management of crops and the effect of variation in plant pathogen populations on plant diseases.I am working at SRUC as a research lecturer on the broadening of the genetic basis of crops. This is done in order to deliver sustainable crop outputs in relation to limited nutrient input but also pathogen resistance. I use landraces to screen for traits that can be used in agriculture. Furthermore we have developed multiparental populations to test the effect of adaptation under low input scenarios. Recent work has been focusing on root morphology and the interaction with (a)biotic soil environments. A particular interest is the interaction of cereals with legumes in intercropping systems. Other cereals include work on oats in a project involving the population genetics of small oats (Avena strigosa) from Uist to compare diversity throughout its Scottish and NW European distribution.Apart from crop related work I am involved in population genetics and fungicide resistance of plant pathogens. This includes the cereal pathogen Ramularia collo-cygni, responsible for Ramularia leaf spot, and the Pine pathogen Dothistroma septosporum, the cause of Dothistroma needle blight. More recently we have started to work on the effect of grassland species mixtures on greenhouse gas emissions. We are studying the effect of rye grass clover mixtures on soil bacterial communities and their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.I am also involved in teaching horticultural and agricultural topics. I am based in both Edinburgh and Glasgow Botanic Gardens campuses.
