Marine Adviser
I provide advice on the designation and maintenance of protected areas of the territorial waters of the British Isles. My work focuses on delivering Conservation Advice for Special Areas of Conservation, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and Marine Conservation Zones.
Project Benthic Taxonomist
My primary role in the laboratory was quality control of macrobenthic sample identification. This multi-faceted role included mentoring colleagues in identification techniques; training and educating others, via the creation and implementation of identification guides; and running identification workshops. I also contributed to data analysis and report writing. The role involved the identification of macrobenthic fauna from various prospective oilfields from around the world. I was involved in identifying samples from: East Africa; West Africa; Egypt; Myanmar; Australia; Romania; Uruguay; Greenland and at numerous locations around the British Isles from nearshore in Wales to deep water off the Shetland Isles. On many of the foreign surveys, I was tasked with supervising and providing quality control for the identification of Molluscan groups.
Environmental Scientist
This multi-discipline role fell into three categories: Offshore / Laboratory / Report writing. In the offshore role, I was expected to design robust survey strategies, using live-feed data and liaise with both the crew of third party vessels and client representatives. Sampling was undertaken using a variety of equipment including: water profilers; underwater cameras; and substrate-sampling grabs. My role then shifted to laboratory work where the samples would be processed and benthic macrofauna identified. Community composition and population data would be compiled and then in the report writing role, this data was analysed. This involved using a number of statistical packages and a characterisation of the faunal community at the sampling site was extrapolated. This was then combined with physical and chemical properties measured at site by other members of the sampling team and condensed into a complete characterisation of the site, including bathymetric plots, chemical analyses and macrofaunal community. I would then synthesise the information into a professional Habitat or Environmental Baseline Survey report and always deliver before deadlines.
