Led a major review of maintenance strategy resulting in approximately 20% reduction in work volume and mapping of planned maintenance and inspections onto mobile devices. Integrated into asset management system.

Responsible for setting policy for maintenance of the national transmission system - monitoring plant condition nationally and proactively managing performance - modelling and predicting plant performance to manage risks and optimise business decisions (including capital expenditure) - developing whole life costing techniques - co-ordinating engineering processes nationally to ensure delivery. Pioneered leading edge modelling techniques based on risk management and financial modelling to reduce maintenance costs. Provided expertise in an international venture to design commercial software tools using these techniques. Typical studies have achieved 40% cost savings on maintenance regimes without compromising performance, saving £1M p.a. with a further £1M to be delivered by 2004/5. Initiated new mechanism for managing asset condition - pivotal in supporting the £300M p.a. capital investment plan during the recent regulatory review. Established improved maintenance policy leading to reduced costs and improved system availability – maintenance intervals have been aligned nationally and increased by up to 50% with no reduction in performance. Delivered suite of documents to support policy and manage process. During this period overall maintenance costs reduced 11.5% from £92M to £81M at a time when the network grew by 6.5%. In 10 years the circuit outage time was halved giving availability levels of 96%. Successfully led cross-organisational team to identify and deliver Key Performance Indicators for National Grid, used for management reporting to the company executive, and in negotiations with the regulator.
