Profile bio

About Peter Jerrard

My academic and working life of the last 15+ years has focused on additive manufacturing, from the early days of my PhD investigating alloys for aerospace use in laser powder bed fusion, through to my current role as Lead AM Engineer. Throughout this time, I have worked from the ground up, first starting as an electron/laser beam powder bed fusion research engineer/technician, through to running an additive manufacturing cell and entering research proposals.Within the additive manufacturing sector, I have worked on:• Development and design of actual additive manufacturing machines (specifically the RenAM series of machines).• Familiarity with multiple additive manufacturing methods, both metal and non-metal.• Parameter development for processing of a wide range of alloys, from aluminium through to tungsten.• Novel use of alternative scan strategies to enable thin wall geometries unachievable with conventional parameters.• Design for additive manufacture, making the most of my certified SolidWorks skills.• Use of the finite element analysis package within SolidWorks to improve on and verify engineering designs.• Many areas of engineering, from medical to defence applications.• A variety of destructive and non-destructive techniques, such as mechanical testing and computed tomography.• Project management, ensuring parts are manufactured, qualified, and sent to the customer on time.As a technical specialist and senior engineer, I always must work closely with a multitude of people; from the end user, all the way to the operators running the machines. This has taught me to be easily approachable, honest, and to always be ready to lend a hand when needed.

Listed skills include Six Sigma, Product Development, Rapid Prototyping, Continuous Improvement, and 2 others.

Lead Additive Manufacturing Engineer

Current

Thatcham, England, United Kingdom

Although my initial role was titled ‘Lead Additive Manufacturing Engineer’, I ended up as acting technology expert since the CTO left shortly after my appointment. In this capacity, I am responsible for parameter development, reviewing and programming heat treatments, advising on technical matters, acting as a technical contact for customers (mostly defence/aerospace), as well as looking after ongoing Innovate UK projects such as AEPEC and ORSAM. I also support the Quality Manager, supplying statistically derived values for datasheets and material procurement and advising on changes to documented processes. When not following up R&D related activities, I support production in setting up customer builds with associated routing using Microsoft NAV.

Apr 2022 - Present

Additive Engineering Manager / Engineer

Derbyshire, England, United Kingdom

I had two roles at Metron AE. In my primary role as AM Manager, it was my responsibility to ensure part production wass done on schedule and adhering to the quality control management system that is AS9100 certified. This included such tasks as constantly reviewing and updating procedures and relevant process documentation, through to acting as a machine operator if the main technician required additional help. The AM machines under my supervision were an Arcam Q10 EBM processing Ti6Al4V and an EOS M400 processing Scalmalloy (a high strength AM friendly Al alloy). My secondary role as AM engineer saw me offering advice to the design engineers as needed, utilising my CAD and AM experience to make parts more AM friendly.

Oct 2020 - Apr 2022

Senior Project Leader

Twi

Sheffield, United Kingdom

My role at TWI was extremely varied in nature: one moment I'd be on the shop floor, preparing the next build to go on a PBF-LB machine; the next writing a proposal for the next round of funding in a research call; and everything in between! My particular specialities at TWI involved development for PBF-LB of lattice and thin wall part manufacture, which amongst other things included parameter optimisation and CAD design.

Sep 2019 - Jul 2020

Additive Manufacturing Specialist

Bristol, United Kingdom

I worked at GKN Aerospace as an Additive Manufacturing Specialist, focusing on EBM whilst simultaneously offering support to the laser powder bed specialist. I have organised design of experiment routines for optimising thin wall structures and have been involved in optimising build layouts and support strategies, as well as implementing novel solutions for dealing with distortion.

May 2018 - Jul 2019

Process Engineer

Stone, Uk

I was employed by Renishaw as a process development engineer, working to develop both material parameters and control of incoming material for use in the Renishaw range of additive manufacturing machines. Originally I was hired as a mechanical design engineer (working on what is now known as the RenAM 500M) before being reallocated to the material development side due to my PhD experience. In my last role, I am also responsible for continually improving the material development process, as well as handling any CAD related demands for the process development team and making recommendation on new equipment to buy. Additionally, I developed a new sign off build geometry which every Renishaw machine must produce before being certified for use. During my time at Renishaw I became familiar with Unigraphics, Teamcentre and to a lesser extent ANSYS, as well as becoming quite proficient in the use of the OGP MVP (a contact/non-contact CMM and microscope system) and receiving training in the use of the Renishaw Equator system (an advanced gauging tool). I have also been trained extensively in the use of QuantAM, Renishaw’s additive manufacturing build preparation software.

Jun 2013 - May 2018

Research Engineer

Mtc - Manufacturing Technology Centre

Coventry, Uk

I was employed as a research engineer at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry as part of the team responsible for producing the additively manufactured Rolls-Royce Trent XWB bearing (currently the largest civil aero engine component manufactured by such a technique). My main purpose was twofold: one, to oversee the running of an Arcam electron beam melting machine, of which I have level two operator training; and two, to ensure quality and accuracy of parts produced. I have been trained to use a GOM ATOS Triple Scan system (with training in PolyWorks for inspection) and limited CT scanning training as part of my duties. From time to time I was also called upon to use my SolidWorks knowledge to help in other projects apart from my own.

Jan 2012 - May 2013

Mechanical Design Engineer

Oakmount Control Systems Limited

Plymouth, United Kingdom

For the final six months of my PhD I also worked full time as a mechanical design engineer at Oakmount Control systems, a company that specialises in PLCs and also produces equipment for factory production lines (anything from safety guards to actual in-line processing equipment).

Jul 2011 - Dec 2011

Mechanical Engineer

Sail Powered Energy Limited

Exeter, United Kingdom

I worked part time at Tradewind Turbines (now 'Sail Powered Energy') as a mechanical/CAD engineer. This involved working with other engineers to design and manufacture a new generation of portable wind turbine, which has had great interest shown in by the MOD.
