Co-Founder

I met Bill Drayton of Ashoka in March 1990. Endeavor was modeled on Ashoka and catalyzed by Bill's gifting of its methodologies and an introduction to the AVINA Foundation, then Ashoka's largest donor in South America. When we met in February 1995, my co-founder Linda Rottenberg was an Ashoka employee fundraising in the Southern Cone and working on a project for Susan Stevenson, Ashoka’s president. In early 1996 at Linda's home in Newton, MA, her father, Alan Rottenberg, upset with me taking Linda "on a wild goose chase in Latin America," relented after I promised to cover two years of Linda’s salary and Endeavor's working capital. In late August 1998, I flew from Buenos Aires to meet Linda in Miami and present to Erica Knie at AVINA’s Coral Cables headquarters. Our presentation ended and Erica asked who would build Endeavor since Linda lived in NYC and I was in graduate school. I said I'd leave Yale Law School the next day and return to Latin America if AVINA funded us. Erica agreed and AVINA became our first institutional supporter.Harvard Business School is essential to Endeavor's success, no one more so than Professor Bill Sahlman’75, PhD’82, for his case studies and mentorship. Gary Mueller and Jason Green’94 were founding board members, Robin Pinckert'96 was our first CFO, and John Siegel and Toby Coppel'97 modeled hiring tests. The HBS Club of Chile hosted me, resulting in support. In Argentina, Javier Losada'97 refined our selection criteria, and Pancho Ravecca'97 founded Endeavor Uruguay. In 1999, Bill Sahlman introduced me to Carlos Alberto Sicupira and Jorge Paolo Lemann (HBS OPM), founders of Endeavor Brazil. Ali Koc'97 founded Endeavor Turkey, and Chris Howard'03 led Endeavor South Africa. In 2009, I joined Endeavor Jordan’s board for our MENA roll-out. In 2013, I led Endeavor into North America, in Miami. I served over two decades on the boards of Endeavor Global, Chile, Jordan, Miami, and Midwest. www.endeavor.org

This endeavor honors my grandfather, Paul J. Kellner, decd. 2009; below, his immigrant love story of America:www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0407/074.html?sh=8a4d4a54a98eAs a member of the first Fulbright Scholars to Hungary after the fall of the FSU, I co-founded EMLA to support Hungary's environment and market-based economy. I modeled it on the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an organization I followed as a teenager. I was inspired by John Adams, its co-founder, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010. Following NRDC's example, I mobilized Hungary's top scientists, economists, lawyers, and journalists to inform and help create policy in support of a healthy populace and strong free market. This multi-disciplinary team subsequently drafted and I edited Hungary's current and contemplated environmental regulations; work prerequisite for participation in the PHARE program. Established in 1989, the Poland and Hungary: Assistance for Restructuring their Economies (PHARE) was one of the three pre-accession instruments financed by the European Union to assist the applicant countries of Central and Eastern Europe in their preparations for joining the European Union. In these early years, we were also commissioned to help draft Bosnia's hazardous waste law. Today, we provide public interest environmental legal advice, legal representation, environmental legal research, and participate in environmental management projects. EMLA is a founding member of Justice and Environment, The Access Initiative, and a member of the European Environmental Bureau and Nuclear Transparency Watch. I provided original funding and grants from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and Charles Stewart Mott Foundation enabled our scale-up. www.emla.hu/en

Founder & Ceo

New York, New York, Us

Published one month before our launch: https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2017/04/11/fight-climate-change-we-need-improve-capitalism-not-get-rid-itRGC was a global macro fund long in formation and short in existence. I got the idea in the early 2000s when exposed to machine learning, and after experiences in emerging markets solidified my belief in the primacy of global capital markets in addressing climate change. With this lens in the early 2000s I imagined AI-enabled integration of environmental data and capital markets. As with Endeavor, I believed incentives could be harnessed in new ways. Like Endeavor, the profit incentive was key, here, slowing climate change if global markets came to understand the science and validity of integration, namely, greater profitability and competitiveness owing to augmented managerial decision-making and resource efficiency. I tested my thesis first with Astro Teller and Dave Andre's Cerebellum Capital (now CEO and CSO, Google X) using Trucost data and later with Nabyl Charania's Rokrr3r Labs. RGC began trading in June 2017, fourteen years after my idea, and right into unfavorable market conditions for a macro strategy, namely, Fed-induced and perpetuated low to negative real interest rates. The anti-macro markets of our first three years were so challenging that legends of absolute return gave capital back to investors and became family offices. I had no prior hedge fund experience, and my partner/CIO had no portable track record or knowledge of ESG, but over these years we posted an average net return of 12% and maintained a Sharpe ratio that never fell below 1.4 and for a short period exceeded 3.0.
