Profile bio

About Peter Key

I'm currently writing health articles for the section of the PhillyVoice website sponsored by Independence Blue Cross, as well as some other sponsored and non sponsored content for the site. I also am working on projects related to the intellectual property of my father, the late cartoonist and writer Ted Key, who created Hazel and the characters that became Peabody and Sherman. I spent nearly 30 years as a full-time journalist, mostly writing on business topics, the last 15 at the Philadelphia Business Journal, where I covered technology and telecom companies, utilities, the defense industry, social services nonprofits and labor at various times. After leaving the PBJ, I wound up writing a lot about the electric power industry, both for publications that cover it and for clients that are in it or serve it. I've written white papers, articles, briefs, emails and book chapters, edited articles and books, and run social media accounts. I am a highly skilled writer who can produce work in many formats, lengths and styles, and am comfortable editing in all of them. I am equally adept at making complex topics accessible to readers and being very creative.I have an MBA with an emphasis in management information systems and a B.A. in English from Penn State.

Listed skills include News Writing, Storytelling, Feature Articles, Newspapers, and 29 others.

Freelance Writer, Editor, Researcher And Consultant

Lansdowne, Pa

Since September 2013, I have been doing writing, research, editing and media and public-relations consulting. Much of my work over the past year has consisted of writing articles and white papers for Energy Central, an electronic publisher serving the electric-power industry. In addition to that industry, I'm most knowledgeable about the areas I've covered as a business reporter, which include technology, telecommunications, venture capital, energy, defense and nonprofits, but I can get up to speed on anything quickly. I am very familiar with the tech-startup and venture-capital communities in the Philadelphia area and am able to apply my knowledge of tech companies, startups, and venture capital/private equity to other markets as well. I am also capable of coming up with creative copy and concepts, especially if it uses humor.Additionally, I am responsible for promoting and marketing the intellectual property that belongs to the estate of my father, cartoonist and writer Ted Key. He created Hazel, a comic panel about a maid that was made into a prime-time TV show starring Shirley Booth and was the subject of "Hazel: A Musical Maid in America," which ran at the Drury Lane Theatre outside Chicago from April 6 through May 29. He also created the characters that became Peabody and Sherman, the time-traveling dog and his boy, who were featured on the TV show, "Rocky and His Friends." I secured him a creators' credit in the movie "Mr. Peabody & Sherman," which was released by DreamWorks Animation in March 2013, and "The Mr Peabody & Sherman" show, which is being streamed on Netflix. I am finishing editing his memoir, which is slated to be published by BearManor Media.

Reporter

Greater Philadelphia Area

My initial beats at the Business Journal were technology, telecommunications, venture capital and nonprofits. Along the way, I added higher education, defense, utilities and energy. Toward the end of my tenure, I covered labor instead of nonprofits. When I was hired, I wrote two or three stories on my beats and a column on technology for the Business Journal's weekly print edition, and did occasional short items for its website. By the time I left, I was doing as many stories and blogs as possible for the Business Journal's website each day; giving my take on what I'd reported on the Web in the paper each week; and writing a large centerpiece story for the paper once every five weeks. I also was taking photos for the print edition and website.

May 1998 - Sep 2013

Reporter

Indianapolis

I was hired to write two stories a week for a newly launched Sunday section on residential real estate, plus an additional one or two stories a week for the Star's business section. Initially, I also covered telecommunications, then added utilities. My duties were eventually switched to covering small, women-owned and minority businesses and venture capital.

Apr 1992 - May 1998

Reporter

I was hired to write for the Business, Entertainment and South Jersey Living sections of The Sunday Press. When the paper's Sunday and daily staffs were combined, I became the primary reporter for non-casino business and assisted the casino reporter with his coverage when needed.
