I graduated from Berlin High School in Berlin, NH, graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota.Susan Magill Smith and I have worked as a professional team beginning at Luther College, Decorah, IA (1975-85), Earlham College, Richmond, IN (1985-1998), and University of Dubuque, Dubuque, IA (1998- 2020).Susan died on Janaury 28, 2013 after a short, valiant encounter with cancer. We shared our life and professional career. She was the complete package: smart, funny, wise, kind generous, thoughtful, loving, courageous, strong, gentle, and had wonderful classic good looks. A colleague described her as an "elegant leader."I'm in her debt, and I am richly blessed.I am blessed and enriched by a wonderful relationship with Michelle who has brought life, light, and love back into my life. We married in a six person ceremony on the banks of the Mississippi in Dubuque, Iowa. Jeffrey Bullock, President of the University of Dubuque and a Presbyterian minister officiated, and others sharing with us included Dana Bullock and Deb and Roy Buol. It was a great day shared with important people in my personal and professional life.My life is doubly blessed by the presence of a lovely, sensitive, perceptive, and whip-smart eight-year-old daughter, Kennah.
