Profile bio

About Peter Lamb

I am a computer scientist with broad interests and diverse skills who has devoted his career to improving healthcare technology. In particular, I am proficient in bioinformatics, machine/deep learning, ontologies, Health IT standards and interoperability, architecture of software systems, algorithm development, big data and statistical analysis, project management, and technology strategy. I can code equally as well as I can present to a board of directors. I truly believe that we as a society are on the cusp of making great advances in Health IT, and that these advances should be universally accessible. To achieve this, it all starts with: understanding user needs, designing and making informed decisions with data, doing the hard work to make things simple for users, iteration, good communication, honesty, and integrity. We can make this happen, together.

Listed skills include Programming Languages, Machine Learning, Algorithm Development, Image Analysis, and 21 others.

Medical Informaticist

Fort Washington, Pa

Responsible for: (1) providing Health IT expertise to NCCN information programs, especially involving NCCN's translation of clinical practice guidelines and chemotherapy orders templates into computer-friendly formats, (2) facilitating the incorporation and use of NCCN content into major Health IT systems, and (3) ultimately ensuring that NCCN's Health IT programs continue to be the gold standard for helping advance excellence in cancer care.Specifically, my work involves making NCCN content more relevant, accessible, and broadly useful by modelling/structuring clinical data and standardizing content to be interoperable with and consumable by third-party Health IT systems. I translate NCCN's clinical content using Health IT standards such as HL7 FHIR and BPMN, and make this content available to consumers in XML format. Ontologies such as SNOMED-CT, LOINC, Rxnorm, and NCI Thesaurus are used to further standardize discrete data concepts, and have been incorporated into NCCN's workflow using NCBO BioPortal. I have also developed SQL queries to run against our clinical content database to ensure consistent representation of information across digital products. These are large-scale Health IT projects: NCCN has almost 70 clinical practice guidelines with approximately 200,000 unique data items, and there are roughly 1,500 chemotherapy order templates. Active within the Health IT standards community, I always aim to share my knowledge and lessons learned with fellow peers. Lastly, I also mentor colleagues at NCCN who are interested in informatics and Health IT.
