All of my earliest memories involve either a computer or being involved in outdoor recreation. These contrasting memories have always defined my life. Eventually, the computer memories grew into a love of software development and problem-solving. Meanwhile, the love of the outdoors grew into a love of rock climbing and alpinism. Why am I talking about my hobbies in my LinkedIn summary? Because it represents how I work in a professional setting. Building software is a lot like climbing a dangerous mountain. Beginning with an objective; then planning a route to get to the base, the summit and finally the return. Deciding which equipment will be needed, how much food and water to bring, and what is the weather going to look like. How will we contact emergency services if something goes wrong? Where are we going to sleep if we get caught in bad weather? Once you start climbing, there are nearly infinite things that can go wrong and solving those problems to reach the summit is the most rewarding part of the process for me. Every aspect of alpinism applies to my day-to-day life as a software developer. Planning, requirements gathering, design, and implementation are all the same skills used in alpinism and software development.I grow my programming skills behind the computer but I grow my engineering skills with everything I do. I love building, I love working hard to solve problems, and I love overcoming challenges. It doesn't matter whether that challenge is getting to the top of a 4000m summit or making your device-run code more performant and secure.
