How do you feel about getting older? I have always been fascinated by people’s conceptions, or should I say misconceptions, of what it means to age. When we are younger we cannot wait to get older. We look forward to being the oldest in the school, having more freedom, more responsibility and being able to earn our own money. Yet as we age this excitement gets flipped on its head. Suddenly we dread our birthdays and adding another candle to our cake. In fact, we are often in denial of the fact that we are ageing. This is especially true when we hit our 50s and 60s - often feeling like we are ‘past it’, like our best years are behind us and it is all downhill from here. But why? Our age is just a made-up thing, used to add some structure to the world. Getting older doesn’t define who we are. Whether we are 25 or 65, we decide whether we are fit, stylish or beautiful - not some common misconception of when we are ‘past our best’.Is a super-active 65-year-old less fit than a sedentary 35-year-old? No.Is a fashion-conscious woman in her 50s any less stylish than a fashion-conscious woman in her 20s? Certainly not.I believe that it is a waste of life to believe that life is over in your later years. You owe it to yourself and the universe to embrace ageing and live your best life regardless of what age you are. Of course, some things get more challenging with age. But we also have more emotional intelligence, knowledge and experience to leverage to our benefit.My life mission is simple.
