About Peter Mares
I am an independent writer and researcher.I'm a contributor to the magazine Inside Story, a fellow at the Centre for Policy Development and an adjunct senior research fellow in Monash University's School of Media, Film and Journalism. I'm also part of the sessional moderating team at The Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership, an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to developing the ethical decision-making skills of Australia’s leaders. I have been working with Cranlana for more than a decade. From 1987 to 2011 I worked as a journalist and broadcaster with the ABC. During those 25 years I served as a foreign correspondent based in Hanoi and presented national radio programs including the daily current affairs show, Asia Pacific and the weekly public policy discussion program, The National Interest. After finishing with the ABC in 2011, I researched urban policy as Cities Fellow at the Grattan Institute. Throughout my career I have combined journalism with public policy research, contributing to magazines, newspapers and journals.I have published three books: "No Place Like Home: Repairing Australia’s housing crisis", (Text, 2018); "Not Quite Australian"(Text 2016), which analyses how temporary migration is changing the nation; and "Borderline", (UNSW Press 2001), a critique of Australia’s approach to refugees and asylum seekers.
