The remarkable thing about this comet: C/2013 A1 – also known as Comet Siding Spring, was that it would have an historic close approach to Mars, passing only 87,000 miles (139,500 kilometers) from the Red Planet on 19 October 2014. About one-third of the distance from the Earth to the Moon.
