After leaving school in 1979 I started my working career as a laborer in a soft drink factory - (Barretts Soft Drinks - Margate) It was there I developed an interest in mechanical engineering under the tutelage of two factory hands involved in the day to day repair and maintenance of the factory machinery.I joined the Royal Air Force 2 years later and trained as a Mechanical Transport Mechanic (Vehicle Mechanic) I progressed through the ranks gaining experience on many types of standard and specialist Airfield Maintenance Vehicles. A career spanning 23 years took me into a management role, with the responsibilities that come with running a large workshop.I developed a keen interest in the specialist vehicles and in particular cranes. I finished my RAF career jointly managing the Lifting Machine Test Centre (LMTC) responsible for the load testing and thorough examination of a wide variety of vehicle mounted lifting equipment, including: Fork Lifts, Cranes, Lorry Loaders and MEWP's. A chance meeting with an ex colleague, led me to being interviewed and successfully employed with what was at the time HSB Haughton (Now HSB Engineering Insurance Services Ltd/ Munich RE) As a multi-disciplined Engineer Surveyor I carry out inspections and thorough examinations on a wide variety of equipment in accordance with PSSR, LOLER, PUWER and COSHH. As a Crane specialist, I routinely examine large mobile and crawler cranes with varying capacities.
