I believe that buildings and architecture are not synonymous. I believe that architecture affects our very core, our human emotion. I believe that where we are influences who we are. Appropriate, well-designed, and well-crafted architecture possess the ability to enhance our lives and to make us better, both individually and as a community. Architecture can affect our mood; instill confidence in ourselves or in humanity; enhance our personal spirituality; foster an excitement for learning; create a place of healing; provide entertainment; bolster productivity; relax our bodies; strengthen families and friendships; or even help us visualize our dreams. I agree with Alain de Botton, in his book, “Architecture of Happiness,” that perhaps “it is architecture’s task to render vivid to us who we might ideally be.”I believe that architects - that I - have an ethical responsibility to, that through forever changing the form, function, feel of a place through architecture, that I, that we, have to make it better than it was; better than even the virgin land before it; a place that makes us better (or at least better off) because of it.
