I am a multi-award-winning freelance features and news journalist with extensive investigative experience. I primarily work with The Irish Times, with Noteworthy.ie (the community-led investigations platform for TheJournal.ie) and with commercial clients. In 2022, I won the Mary Raftery Journalism Prize, awarded annually to just one national or local journalist, for my work on the experiences of sexual abuse survivors for Noteworthy.ie. The judges described my work as "a very balanced, nuanced, blend of personal experience and policy analysis that spoke to the heart of an important matter of public importance."I write on a range of topics for press and commercial clients, and have particular expertise in analysing policy documents and research papers and translating them into stories that speak to wider audiences. My specialist areas include but are not limited to health, crime, education, science, youth affairs, consumer affairs and human interest. I am available to write reports and press releases, or to craft stories that organisations can use to promote their work. I have over 15 years of experience in commercial writing, with clients including UCD, Maynooth University, Fáilte Ireland, the Irish Farmer's Association, the Library Council of Ireland and Dublin City Council. My commercial features are regularly included in The Irish Times. I recently wrote an article for TheJournal.ie's Good Information Project (TGIP), which combined extensive analysis of policy documents and research around childcare in Ireland with expert interviews on the State's options for improving outcomes for parents, children and childcare practitioners & educators. Investigative ReporterThejournal.Ie Jun 2019 - PresentDublinIn June 2019, I was hired by Journal Media to work on for its new outlet, Noteworthy.ie, a crowd-funded and crowd-sourced investigative journalism site that takes an innovative approach: source ideas for stories from the public, investigative their viability and then carry out work on funded proposals. This model has allowed TheJournal.ie to carry out extensive investigations into local, national and transnational stories that may have otherwise have gone unreported.Since then, I have worked with the Noteworthy team on a freelance basis, conducting extensive and intensive investigations on environmental issues, sexual crime, religious patronage of schools, domestic violence, the rights of same-sex parents, and more. I created a new course, "Myth and Legend in Irish Tradition." This was the first course offered in Irish Folklore (which has been an independent discipline in UCD since the 1960s) which was primarily focused on contemporary folklore.
