The role of the administrator in an international school is to ensure that all students arrive each day to a safe and fun environment where learning is the priority. I work with staff as a member of the team to ensure that we maximize student achievement. In order to achieve this, it is critical that I lead as a visionary and use the particular school and its culture as a framework to follow. Fostering a positive relationship with the parents and community to create a home-school partnership is when good things happen in a school. Overall, I take the pulse of the school by connecting with the staff and students in order to improve student learning.I ensure that students have a safe and trusting environment in which to learn. I encourage a positive atmosphere where the students can take risks without fear of failure. Positive reinforcement is used with students and they are given challenging goals to achieve. This challenging environment enables them to succeed and these expectations are clear and understood. Students are assessed frequently and given feedback constantly. Expectations and criteria for assessment are posted throughout the school and are communicated with parents and the community. By using formative assessment, the student and teacher work together to maximize student learning and improvement. My role is to ensure that the teacher is using this framework.I work to recruit faculty who are competent and qualified, but are also willing and able to work towards the educational goals of the school. I promote teamwork within the staff and work towards a shared vision of improving student achievement. Staff that are treated professionally in a trusting environment maximize student learning. Ongoing professional development is crucial to the success of the team. Staff evaluation must be seen as a positive measure to improve staff development rather than a negative aspect of working in school. I bring an understanding and knowledge of educational theory and practice that assists me in the examination and evaluation of faculty. The continued development of faculty and staff supporting the student’s education has my highest priority.International schools present a challenging educational environment with the different demands of a changing and diverse school community. My job as an administrator is to be properly aware of these demands and to work towards a synthesis, in which the school has its own clear identity with mission, vision and shared values to maximize the education of all its students.
