I joined Finning in June 2021 as a consultant engineer. Within Finning I provide technical expertise and guidance in the development of complex engineering bids, using Caterpillar diesel, gas and energy storage products, ensuring designs developed are commercially viable, can be delivered within the agreed timeframes and are fit for purpose. I ensure the engineering solutions proposed in a bid meet the customer requirements, relevant legislation, best practice, Finning & Caterpillar’s quality standards and have been developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders.

I joined the Caterpillar Custom Power Solutions Electrical Design Department in October 2013 as an electrical design and commissioning engineer. There I was involved with the design, testing and commissioning of generator, switchgear and generator enclosure control systems. A selection of my responsibilities were; creating enclosure wiring diagrams for manufacture, creating wiring diagrams incorporating 3rd party generator controllers with CAT and Perkins generators (3rd party controllers include Woodward, Comap, Deepsea etc), sourcing, negotiating prices and purchasing parts, generating bills of materials, cable sizing calculations, and working closely with consultants, customers and Caterpillar dealers to ensure designs meet the required specification.My current role within Caterpillar allowed me the opportunity to stay with a project through all stages from initial design, manufacture, on site installation and commissioning through to integrated system testing. This experience helped me design a product that is both easy to manufacture, install and commission, as well as being user friendly. The role also allow me to travel to global locations to support both Caterpillar dealers and end customers.

I began work with Caterpillar on the 1st August 2011 in the Custom Power Solutions Validation Department. Here I was responsible for the set up and testing of prototype diesel and gas generator packages, generating validation reports and conducting customer witness tests.The major validation tests I was involved with were assessing cooling package performance, measuring noise, vibration testing, safety audits, assessing serviceability, measuring fuel consumption, and assessing generator and enclosure control systems.I worked closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to ensure the prototype generator package met required specifications, and with manufacturing engineers to ensure that when the generator package went into production it could be manufactured efficiently.

With Dugan Electrical Services I completed an apprenticeship in Electrotechnical Services. I was responsible for the installation, commissioning and testing, to BS 7671, of wiring systems in domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural locations. I gained knowledge of extra low voltage, single phase and three phase systems, using a range of installation and cable containment types. I also developed my live testing and fault finding abilities.

Part time job during my studies. I was involved with several large civil engineering projects, including the demolition of a disused factory and the construction of a landfill site.During the factory demolition I gained some valuable experience identifying, containing and disposing of controlled waste. During the landfill site construction I worked closely with civil engineers to ensure the strict landfill site construction tolerances were met. On all sites I was responsible for the operation and maintenance of plant machinery including hydraulic excavators, articulated dump trucks and mobile crushers.Part time jobs don't come much better than this!
