Peter was primarily responsible for uplifting the Data Quality Assurance for the Enterprise Data Product as well as designing and implementing a branching strategy for the SQL database deployment using azure devops. Recently he worked on performance tuning long running ETL jobs with developers by facilitating Lean thinking in the redesign process.

Peter commenced his DevOps Engineer role with a focus again on building CI/CD pipelines but this time enabling the team to empower themselves to obtain the goal. He managed key detractors in the team eventually winning them on the idea and long term benefit from such practices. Peter has also been tasked with creating an automated cloud based Elasticsearch stack in AWS which is currently implemented in production. This implementation also featured a CI/CD pipeline including automated testing for changes as well as Automated Recovery to meet the Business Continuity Plan.

Peter commenced his Leadership role at TattsGroup with a clear focus of designing and enabling a Testing culture within the Business Intelligence teams. His key project was centred around developing a BI wide Testing Strategy, adhering to the fundamental Agile principles. After an initial analysis of current Agile and Testing practices Peter realised that a new Testing centric way of working would need to be rolled out and coaching provided to internal stakeholders to align their focus with this new strategy.In the first few months Peter rolled out Peer Programming sessions with developers to begin the transition to Test Driven Development. These sessions also explained the importance of moving away from manual changes in production to consistent delivery pipelines with in built automated testing. Once completed a BI wide application systems analysis was conducted to outline opportunities for Test Automation. This analysis was recorded in a Testing Strategy Document along with recommendations for supporting DevOps tools. This document was further broken down into projects to be managed and executed. Over the last year Peter has been involved in two initiatives, each central to the DevOps responsibility taken on after accepting the role. The first was fostering an Agile culture between central and federated DBA's as well as their customers, in order to pipeline initiatives for automation into the central team's backlog. The second initiative was to bring a DevOps culture into his team.It was identified early on that the Content, Communication & Workflow, a Filenet delivery team, would benefit most from implementing end-to-end regression testing for use within the delivery phase iteration cycles. To this end, Selenium was chosen and a number of test scenarios drafted and coded. The code was designed with a hierarchical structure so that entire classes could be consumed and used by other Filenet Delivery teams to speed up the department's journey towards this one, specific DevOps goal. An abridged list of duties includes:- Technical Lead for Selenium- Software Design and Refactoring after retrospectives- Java Object Oriented Design- Manage and Up Skill On and Offshore team members on Selenium so the whole team would become engaged and responsible on the need for regression testing for long term success.- Agile estimation and break down of large cards- Agile planning and assignment of cards based on team member's technical proficiency each iteration.- Reporting to a department wide "Tribe" for knowledge sharing and problem resolution.

During his time as an Oracle DBA in Suncorp, Peter worked on two different Data Warehouse systems working closely with application support teams providing first level support for performance problems as well as RDBMS related questions during new schema design sessions. An abridged list of duties includes:- Table Reorganization- Upgrades and Patching- Implementation of new database features for improved performance. Partitioned tables and query rewrites.- Review and recommend on application design changes to meet Suncorp Group wide standards.- Responsible for managing requested systems refreshes in a complex environment with large data- Responsible for continuous improvement initiatives to enable our customers to meet their goals and deadlines.Peter's highlight while working in this space, was the creation of unix shell scripts that allowed for multiple cascading test environment refreshes, both full and sampled, to occur in a timely manner with a high degree of success. Before these scripts were created the process could take up to one week and was error prone, as it relied upon manual database commands and the involvement of other teams, both on and off shore to get tape backups successfully restored. After these scripts were created, a collaboration with midrange specialists enabled supply of one master call that would effectively automate the entire process in under 24 hours reducing the amount of handoffs and greatly improving the success rate.
