I'm an technologist, technical contributor, sometimes manager on some high performing, innovative software teams including Photoshop, Acrobat, Lightroom, Camera Raw, and Vibe. My current focus is on applications of deep learning.I invented a technology, now shipping, that condenses a 1-4 hour process of music video creation for social media to 20-30 seconds automatically on IOS. Here's a sample created on my iPhone5: https://vimeo.com/149942416, or https://vimeo.com/149941988.My interests are as a technical contributor and technologist. I want to create great products! In my most recently shipping project, I worked in a small lean startup like environment within Adobe. My focus was on automatic video creation for social media on IOS, targeting Instagram and Facebook. I worked with AVFoundation, and developed automatic music analysis and video creation algorithms. The app is available on the IOS store as Adobe Vibe, and other details are available at www.madewithvibe.comPrior to that I spearheaded Adobe's integration of video into its still photography products, including Lightroom and Photoshop where I had a significant direct technical role.I've had a significant role both managerially and technically in the development of Adobe's two major image processing pipes, Photoshop and Camera Raw, setting them up to scale over multiple OS platforms. Under my stewardship as manager of Adobe Camera Raw, it was transformed from a Photoshop Plug-in into a company wide image processing technology on six platforms, and is now referred to as Adobe's "Company Jewel." As a technical lead, I formulated and implemented Photoshop's original strategy to bring out identical Windows and Mac versions forcing Apple and Intel to compete against one another as the best Photoshop platform. My current work involves using machine learning, deep learning, and deep re-enforcement learning to automate imaging and video workflows.

Digital Imaging And Video, Principal ScientistAdobe Systems Incorporated Mar 2012 - Present• In my most recent work I've moved out of management and into a pure technical contributor and technologist role. As noted in the summary, I created a system for automatically creating social media focused music videos automatically on mobile devices quickly. I participated in a small research team to identify the user and product model, working with the research lab to identify techniques that would work in the mobile environment.• I Developed a music analysis algorithm that can automatically fit photos and videos to music for any of the >25 million selections on iTunes or Amazon. I also developed a set of algorithms to quickly analyze people's photos and videos and set them to music in a cool way in 20-30 seconds on mobile devices which has shipped on IOS as Adobe Vibe and in Adobe Clip products. • I also managed the Adobe Camera Raw team for a number of years. I Managed the teams through the process of transforming the Camera Raw Photoshop plug-in into into the industry leading photographic image processing pipe its now become, and referred to internally as the "Company Jewel."• I led a research project with the goal to identify and develop technologies needed for automatic content generation from consumer level photos and videos on mobile devices. The technology enhances the dramatic and emotional impact in a constrained UI and computational environment. The project received an internal Adobe award and became the basis for the Adobe Vibe project mentioned above.• In the last year I've been spending a lot of time programming with Matlab, IOS, xcode, ObjC, using the AVFoundation framework and the Caffe deep learning framework. I've also done some evaluation work using Python, Opencv, Theano, and Torch7. I also am programming on linux, using gcc, and gdb.

Camera Raw, Lighroom Technical Lead, Senior Computer Scientist 2, ManagerAdobe Systems Incorperated Feb 2010 - Mar 2012San Jose, Ca, Us• Jump started a collaboration between Adobe’s Digital Imaging and Video group in response the introduction of video features on still photography cameras. We were able to accomplish the integration of Adobe’s video technology into its photographic centric workflows during the CS6 and CS7 releases.• Defined the APIs, architecture and implemented a cross-platform, cross-product, video engine shipping in Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, and Photoshop Elements. Features included format decoding, a video player, multi-format export, supports a timeline model, multi-channel audio, a scene graph with keyframe animation in a Core Animation style. A Windows and OSX versions are shipping, and recently an IOS version implementing the architecture has also been developed.• Assumed a technical leadership position on the Lightroom team at a time when nearly all senior developers on the team choose to leave at once. I essentially stepped into a technical leadership vacuum and helped the management navigate the challenges of rebuilding the team. -
Camera Raw, Photoshop Technology Transfer, ManagerAdobe Systems Incorperated Jul 2007 - Mar 2010San Jose, Ca, Us• Managed a tech transfer team for two Photoshop releases responsible for productizing imaging research including content aware fill, seam carving, Lens correction, and HDR image stacking. I assumed the role at the initial creation of the Photoshop Tech Transfer group.• Managed the Adobe Camera Raw team during the upgrading of it's color management technology, addition of localized corrections, introduced lens profiles, improved noise reduction, and upgraded the imaging pipe to a tiled system and more. I assumed the role at a time when the group was substantially challenged operationally and staffing wise. Under my stewardship we put in place the processes to reliably make quarterly releases to support new camera models, and I hired key staff that propelled Camera Raw to the jewel it's become.• Managed the process of extending the Adobe Camera Raw desktop plug-in to become an IOS library embedded in the Adobe Revel product line.• Developed, with another colleague, a technical turn-around strategy for Photoshop-CS5. My coding contribution was to move nearly all the Photoshop plug-ins onto a cross-platform, Windows/OSX-Cocoa framework in an emergency fashion. -
