Principal Social Worker (Mental Health)
Strathclyde Regional Council Social Work Dept
Glasgow
Responsible for Psychiatric Hospital & Out-Patient Social Work Services in East Glasgow. Also responsible for leading the conceptualisation, design and managing the establishment of the first Home Support & Day/Evening Activities support service for Individuals with serious mental health issues in the UK (known as the 'Crescent Project') under the auspices of the Greater Easterhouse Mental Health Pilot Project. This provided support to Individuals in ordinary mainstream tenancies, albeit using extraordinary levels of support when required, as an alternative to congregating people in a range of traditional 'Supported Accommodation' facilities. It thus totally avoided 'processing' people through a series of institutional hurdles and met their aspirations to live in their own homes. It also solely used mainstream community day/evening facilities such as Community Centres, Leisure & Recreation Centres, Community Education facilities, Colleges, Tenants Halls, Churches facilities, cinemas, restaurants, pubs, etc. in an integrative approach that sought to make greatest use of the types of valued services enjoyed by the general public and by doing so, enhanced the confidence, self-esteem and social and practical skills of Supported Individuals - and correspondingly, the ways in which they were viewed by the general public, i.e. as fellow citizens co-residing in their local communities. The Crescent Project was a great success.
