After graduating from University in Toronto in the spring of 1995, my first full time position was in the Brink's Money Room in Toronto. I was there for a year when I was promoted to be an assistant supervisor there. When I was asked to move up to be a supervisor, it also included me getting my FAC (Firerams Certificate) and carrying on the job, which I was not prepared to do, so I began my journey in the financial industry instead. Started in the mutual fund industry as an administration temp, first a 3-month assignment with McLean Budden Investments (now part of SunLife), and then another 3-month assignment with Asset Capital Management, which offered me a full time position in the fall of 1998. In between those two assignments I had a 6-week stint where I was a cold caller in a "call centre" peddling newsletters on penny stocks and a 1 month period as a financial advisor's assistant that was reduced to cold calling for new clients and answering phones and taking messages because the advisor never answered his phone (this was in the pre-cell phone days!). Asset Capital Management was bought out by Merrill Lynch and we became Merrill Lynch Asset Management. I stayed there until there was an opportunity to work in one of their Financial Advisor offices, so I tried again as a Financial Advisor Assistant while I was studying to get my IA designation. Again this was a bad move as my relationship with this advisor was worse than the previous advisor. 6 months of this, and an announcement that Merrill Lynch was leaving Canada and being bought out by CIBC was my signal to move on. I started at Fidelity Investments Canada Limited (FICL) in 2000 and was there for 3 years, first in their Service Solutions Unit and later in the Fidelity Retirement Services department once I had my IA designation, working to assist workers investing the employer set up Defined Contribution Pension Plan. But life changes and moving to Stratford made commuting to downtown Toronto tedious so finding a job closer to home was necessary. My first position out of Toronto was at the Western Fair Racetrack Slots. There for 2 years and then back into the mutual fund industry as an administrator in Kitchener with CI Mutual Funds until they decided to combine with their Toronto office. Not wanting to go back to commuting to Torontro, I left to work locally at Perth Precision Machining and Manufacturing in 2006, now as an A/P and A/R clerk. ... part 2 to come!
