Prof. O'Brien has a unique mix of academic and industrial experience. He has the leadership skills and vision to translate fundamental research to successful commercialisation, achieved through strategic collaborations with leading academic and industry partners worldwide. Since joining the Tyndall Institute, he has established a state-of-the-art packaging and systems integration research capability, built a highly-skilled research team, formed numerous international academic and industrial collaborations, and secured significant research funding.Prof. O'Brien has been awarded over 40M Euros in funding as lead PI over the past six years, with over 25M Euros in research funding directly to his group. This comprises funding from agencies including the European Commission, Science Foundation Ireland, ESA, DARPA and direct funding from many companies.Prof. O'Brien is a regular keynote and invited speaker at leading conferences in packaging and systems integration technologies. He has received numerous awards, including University College Cork's 'Research Group of the Year' and Science Foundation Ireland's 'Best International Collaboration'. He is an advisor to numerous public and private scientific and technology investment organisations around the world, and has conducted numerous reviews of large-scale investments in the area of semiconductor packaging and systems integration.
