I am a respiratory physician, pulmonologist and immunologist working on viral infections of the lung. I established the Department of Respiratory Medicine at St Mary's in 1988, which became part of Imperial College in the 1990s. Our research focus is on immunopathogenesis of infection, spanning cell biology, animal studies and investigation of human disease (including volunteer challenge with RSV and flu). I am Theme Lead on the respiratory component of Imperial’s Biomedical Research Centre, providing coordination of NIHR-funded research in respiratory medicine at Imperial NHS Trust facilities. As the Director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection, I coordinate the activities of more than 20 principal investigators. I have served on many committees (e.g. for the Academy of Medical Sciences, Wellcome Trust, Department of Health) and am vice-chair of the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza (ESWI) which works to harmonize European Policy on influenza. I was elected President of the British Society for Immunology in 2014.
