Designed and built developments way bigger than I should have as an engineer but how else does one learn and gain architectural experience? I obtained MCIAT (then MBIAT) in 1991 via the profiling route. It was pretty clear that my abilities were up to scratch when one of the gentlemen interviewing me looked at my drawings of a recently constructed £1.98M apartment development and in something of a disbelieving tone asked "So you designed this entirely on your OWN?". As a matter of fact I did. I am selfish like that.At the end of my profiling interview, where three gentlemen sat behind nicely embossed name plates and grilled me with probing and challenging questions for several hours, I was asked if I had any questions for them. I said "Yes, just one actually. (looking at the one on the left) How is it that YOUR name is O'Riley yet YOU (looking at the one on the right) are the one with this Irish accent?" They said they did not know. To which I said "Well its nice to know that YOU don't have all the answers either".Being MBIAT assisted greatly with recognition by lending institutions and obtaining PPI so I was then able to sign off on all related development funding too. I built a few apartment schemes and that taught me value for money. It is surprising how much you can reduce your spending when you are both the designer AND the client and bill payer! Since then I have designed all schemes for clients as though I was investing my own funds. As most of my clients have been property developers, that went down well :-)I am still designing and building but now in Asia where the economy is too small to suffer a recession just yet. The profits are smaller but far more reliable :-) And, HUGE bonus, I no longer need to deal with the UK planning system - broken and irreparable as it is. Hurrah!

Youngest of 18 staff with no chance of reaching the head of department until everyone else had got the post and died first. Fed up watching shop floor workers make suggestions that earned them a £250 bonus for what I was being paid £62.50 a week to do every day. I designed some cool machines that excavated, crushed, ground, transported and pressed clay into the shape of bricks.When I suggested a more updated design (hydraulic) version of the Victorian (mechanical) brick press to my boss he reached out to the window cill, picked up a facing brick that just happened to be there and placed it in front of me on the desk. He asked me "What is that?". I said "A brick." He asked "What will YOUR machine make?" I said "A brick.". He picked the brick up, put it back on the window sill and said. "No point then is there.". I resigned.Extruded bricks are now made in their millions every week. Hmph.
