"Strategy without action is just a daydream, but action without strategy quickly becomes a nightmare"The above proverb is an excellent summary of the way I look at businesses. I enjoy working as a hands-on technical designer, especially in an environment where business needs drive the application of (new) technology, with a firm focus on solutions for business problems rather than technology alone. All projects should include customer interaction both in design- and implementation phases for them to be succesfull.I also firmly believe that no company should just implement solutions for their individual business problems. A clear vision on the development of the business and a strategy that supports that vision are both essential for the alignment of technology solutions with the business as a whole. Ad Hoc solutions will often result in integration problems later on, and usually proof te be expensive in the long run.So yes, action is needed and welcomed, but always embedded in vision and strategy. Vision and strategy are - in my opinion - a shared responsibility between "management" and those working in the field. Especially those of us dealing with customers and their needs should strive to contribute to the overall strategy and be an ambassador when it comes to discussing it with a broad audience, both within and outside the company.
