Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Pickel is employed at John Deere GmbH & Co. KG (JD), a leading producer of agricultural, forestry and construction machinery. Within John Deere Peter Pickel and his team lead all publicly funded R&D activities in EU zone and external technology relationships. Peter Pickel studied mechanical engineering with a focus on production technology at the University of Berlin (TU) and holds a PhD from the same university. His PhD thesis focused on tractor ride dynamics. In 2000 (till 2010) he became a full tenured professor for agricultural engineering, communal machinery and environmental technologies at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (Saxony Anhalt, Germany) where he also was the dean of the Agricultural Faculty from 2003 to 2006. Today, as Manager External Relations at John Deere, Peter Pickel heads a staff department with currently 13 employees from eight nations. He identifies relevant development needs in numerous JD units and builds joint teams with these units and external partners and manages such consortia from the project initiation phase to project completion. Peter Pickel has successfully managed approximately 60 such projects at JD. Peter Pickel holds leading honorary positions in associations and research institutions (including Fraunhofer and Leibniz Institutes). In 2019 he became honorary professor at University of Kaiserslautern. He is a recognized top expert for mobile working machines with a focus on agricultural technology. His innovation activities focusses on automation concepts (including autonomy and communication systems), electrification, combustion engines as well as manufacturing systems and technology assessment (LCAs).Peter Pickel usually works in global teams within the company. In various EU committees he represents the interests of his company and of the agricultural machinery manufacturers as a whole also towards the European Commission. His commitment to the community of agricultural machinery manufacturers was recognized in 2012 when he received the Recognition Award of the European Society of Agricultural Engineers (EurAgEng).
