As a Safety Specialist, I visit all types of private industry facilities (manufacturing, construction, healthcare, etc.) and provide employers with consultation services to get the most out of their workplace safety and health programs. Our service offers a review of written safety programs, a facility walkthrough to look for hazards, and both formal and informal training for small employers (250 or less on-site or 500 or less corporate-wide). These services are free to employers. The only requirement of the program is that the employer corrects any recognized hazard identified during the walkthrough of the facility.Our office is also responsible for SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Program) in the State of Kansas. Companies in this program recognize the positive effect having a safe and healthful workplace can have on their company culture. These companies have successfully implemented the elements of a safety and health management system into their to protect their employees day after day.

While working toward my Masters of Science degree, I was able to work as one of the Graduate Assistants for the Wood Technology program. Being in this position allowed me to begin to develop skills in teaching and training, as well as performing periodic inspections of the several shop areas to ensure the equipment, machinery, and overall environment were free of recognized hazards. This would be a great introduction and the beginning of gaining the hands-on experience in the type of work I would be performing as a Safety Specialist with the Kansas Department of Labor.
