Guidewire Platform Architect
Commercial Business Architect
• My role of Business Design Architect for the PolicyCenter project further expanded, and I became the Business Architect for the whole SME (Small to Medium Enterprise) Commercial department.• My responsibilities then became owning the UX and Performance of all IT systems related to the SME system, ensuring consistency of approach and ease of use for our underwriters.• As PolicyCenter is the main system we rely upon, I put myself forward to go through the developer training, so I could better understand the code being written by our developers, and the possibilities/limitations of solution design on the platform.• My responsibilities also included ownership of solution design from a business perspective, working with solution architects and application architects to ensure the solutions being designed were acceptable and fit the long-term goals of the business.
Insurtech Lead
• One of 3 people selected for a 3 month placement in Silicon Valley, working with our partners Plug and Play to find innovative startups in the Insurtech industry to work with.• Built a large network of contacts in the Tech Ecosystem in Silicon Valley, and a thorough understanding of the startup lifecycle.• Discovered multiple startups which Aviva are now either partnered with, or doing proof of concepts with, with a view to partnering with in the future.
Policycenter Business Design Architect
I identified the need for a Business Design Architect role on the project, and put myself forward to do this role, to which the senior leadership team agreed. My responsibility is to make sure the technical solutions being designed by the development team are be suitable for the business, that they are consistent with our previous approach so the users didn’t have to do the same thing in different ways in the system and that the solutions are suitable for re-use in future product and cover builds. This has seen me develop detailed knowledge of every part of our system build, identifying and validating solutions for rating, print, co-insurance, re-insurance, speciality lines and new product builds, workflow, user access and profiles, international, migration, accumulation and exposure management.
Policycenter Subject Matter Expert
• Initial responsibilities on the project included providing business requirements for PolicyCenter as an underwriting Subject Matter Expert in a Waterfall delivery, and making sure the build happening on PolicyCenter was kept up to date with the build on ClaimCenter.• In April 2013 the program moved to an Agile delivery, and I then began working with our Agile tracks as a business SME providing the business requirements for a variety of functions within the system, including integrations with our electronic filing system, premium override and commission override.• My role on the project further expanded, due to my increasing knowledge of the system, and my background in Mathematics, Computer Science and Underwriting. These qualities made me uniquely qualified to become the lead SME for anything in the system relating to pricing, premium, commissions and fees, including work on International premium and pricing functionality in multi-currency along with complex tax routines, and work on London market co-insurance and re-insurance solutions.• Whilst still doing my SME role, there was a lack of BA and Scrum master resource on the project, and I stepped in to take on these responsibilities for the track as well. During this period, I built strengths in sprint planning and organisation, user story creation and structuring, track resourcing and requirements gathering.• Played a key role in deploying the products for all lines of business.
Systems Thinking Subject Matter Expert
• I was part of a group of underwriters chosen to be part of a Systems Thinking intervention for the Commercial Underwriting system within Aviva, due to my willingness to identify wasteful processes and create better ones. During this time, I learned the core principles of Systems Thinking directly from Vanguard Consultants.• Successfully redesigned the processes used by underwriters to do renewals, mid-term adjustments and cancellations to remove waste, with my findings and recommendations forming the core of the new look system. These new processes were then rolled in to ~1500 underwriters, and I personally trained over 300 of those.• During this time I came up with a number of ideas to change our current IT systems so they would more efficiently support our business, most notably a plug-in for Outlook to connect to our electronic filing system, which, for a £40K one off spend is now saving the company over £4.5million annually.
Commercial Underwriter
• Part of the London City Team, covering quotations, renewals and mid-term adjustments on all policies.• Previously a part of the Broker Network Team, servicing one of the biggest Networks in the UK.• Have trained new team members once they have completed their basic training, and also trained groups of new starts.• Quickly and accurately solve queries over the phone and in emails from brokers, and via verbal referrals from other team members on how to correctly proceed with tasks.• Have built an excellent rapport with key members of our broker panel.• Completed my CertCII qualification with the Chartered Insurance Institute.
