I chaired three major subcommittees of the storied Ways and Means Committee where I learned to use the gavel to negotiate and advance legislative priorities and conduct investigations.I experienced the value and subtlety of working across the aisle while chairing the U.S. House Democracy Partnership, a bipartisan commission charged with building parliamentary capacity in emerging democracies abroad. In addition to the tax, trade and health care policies of the Ways and Means Committee, by serving on the Financial Services Committee I dealt closely with capital markets, insurance, government sponsored enterprises, monetary policy and technology issues.On a personal level, my wife Elizabeth and I have been married for over thirty five years and we have four adult children and now a grandson.
