From the 2011 inception of the Journal’s Review section of arts and ideas until I retired in 2018, I worked as one of four editors on the highly regarded section. (A separate group of editors is responsible for the book-review section within the supplement.) While I also worked on front-page and longer-form pieces in the Review section, my main responsibility was making the section’s columns lively, accurate and accessible to a broad public. These columns included science columns by well-known authors Alison Gopnic, Matt Ridley, Susan Pinker and Nobel-Prize winning physicist Fran Wilczek; history by best-selling author Amanda Foreman; humor by Joe Queenan and weekly features about art exhibitions. From 2003 until 2011, I worked on the Weekend cultural section, where I edited all types of cultural features and travel articles. My first 21 years at the Journal were spent editing for the general paper, where I rose to head an operation aimed at preparing new editors to meet the high standards of the Journal, from understanding libel issues to writing lively and accurate headlines. I edited business and politics articles of all types, many of which appeared on what was then the Journal’s equivalent of a front page (page one being largely reserved for features). I cut my journalistic teeth writing features at the Springfield Morning Union (1974-81), where I interviewed judges, murderers, tofu makers, ministers, doctors, proselytizing Japanese priests and trappers who lived without electricity.
