We designed the lab, bought equipment and systems, trained the staff and installed an efficient system of production control and communications. After we had to find ways to increase production and control the QC for the 'mother company'.The lab was one of the first to use extensive digital production, not just milling but also 3D resin printing for the Crown & Bridge frames, which were then cast in all sorts of alloys. This incorporated 2, 3D Pro-Jet printers, 2 DentMill milling machines and 7 3-Shape scanner / design stations. We even tried the Sensable system for the RPD frames via 3D printing and I managed to cast 4 in one normal sized investment ring. Both me and a French Director were trained in the 3-Shape C & B CAD/ CAM and then I was trained in the Sensable Haptech system. High production targets were set and I introduced a shift system, to maximise space and equipment. It was a very challenging job, due to language problems and organization / training of the Vietnamese staff, who mostly excelled in their duties. It was a rare invaluable experience for anyone in the trade. You learn a lot managing semi and unskilled workers to their best ability. How to train and organize them in an efficient system to achieve smooth production whilst reducing errors and waste. The design of the lab is very important according to the various elements of the equation presented along with the various 'systems' and products used in production. This can be down to something as simple as the internal lab route for the work and the lab form provided to the departments doing the work, so that errors can be avoided, especially when dealing with language barriers. Creating smooth workflows is paramount with such a short turn around time, so putting the right 'Toll Gates' in place for QC to minimise waste and run a Lean workplace! I enjoyed my time there. But left after an accident out of work and went back to my house in Thailand to recover. Show less

They were stuck at 11 employees with very basic techniques and haphazard production.Over a few years of very hard work, long hours and language problems we started to get things organized and standardized. I was the only foreigner technician / manager for quite a while from 1999 to around 2005 and we developed to nearly around 180 staff during that time. We introduced new techniques to Thailand, doing ‘Bredent’ and other Precision Attachments that were not used, we were the first lab to do flexible materials with the introduction of Acetal Resin injection ( this captured the interest of the local clinics and Universities ). and Procera. The market grew from 99% French to a mix of foreign work from Scandinavia, US, and European countries and around 45% local Thai market. Assistance came in the form of German master techs and the lab grew to nearly 300 before we parted.I had to progress from technician, to technical manager, production manager, at times lecturer for visiting Profs! Finally I became Production Director and we did this with nearly all untrained, non-dental experienced staff. I also did a lot of client liaison work and communications in French and English on commercial levels and nearly all on technical levels with the clients, so I consider the time at “Hexa Ceram Co., Ltd “ one of the most challenging I have had. It was my first time in Asia and thrown in at the deep end! Long hours and in the beginning, a 6 day week with cultural and language barriers to cross. But life is full of challenges and this was just another valuable one! If you have a logical approach and an analytical mind it can be a rare learning experience. Show less
