Assessing prospective Sergeants and Inspectors working towards a Level 4/5 Certificate in Police Line Management on behalf of the Metropolitan Police Service
Emergency Response - London
Leading a team of over 60 police officers, I hold oversight of policing service delivery across three diverse London boroughs on a 24/7 basis. Directing response to emerging serious events, activating accident and emergency plans, I successfully identify, manage and mitigate emerging threat, harm and risk in this dynamic environment. Promoting continual team progression, I actively support the development of expertise and performance of my team whilst ensuring exceptional levels of service delivery and compliance with stringent legal and ethical requirements are consistently met.I direct varied, often high priority, issues simultaneously, delivering clear and calm supervision under the most challenging circumstances. I ensure the appropriate prioritisation, response and resourcing, exercising my depth of knowledge around criminal law, disclosure and investigations. I consistently demonstrate the ability to think strategically and effectively in even the highest tension environments. I have built resilience through the continual review of working practices and implementation of improvements to enable consistent and predictable delivery of optimum service. I hold additional responsibility for a diverse portfolio:• Driving effective missing person enquiries, I set investigative strategies, conducted reviews and worked with multi-agency partners to reduce missing episodes. • I hold responsibility for the supervision and risk management of volume crime. Setting investigative strategies, overseeing the capture and management of evidence gathering and advise and authorise on charging decisions. • I conduct sensitive internal investigations where complaints have been assessed by the Directorate of Professional Standards to have not met the seriousness of gross misconduct. Examining evidence, I determine further action, including guidance and development action, demonstrating transparency of process for external scrutiny if subsequently required.
Safer Neighbourhood
Managing a dedicated team, I led the implementation of long term solutions to community issues. I addressed issues of greatest concern from management of crime patterns escalations to challenging anti-social behaviour and the execution of warrants. Engaging throughout the community, I supported neighbourhood involvement in policing initiatives, maintaining regular community contact and driving the appropriate sharing of intelligence, planning and implementing proactive operations to combat persistent offending. Seeking to reduce crime, and fear of crime, I worked closely with community leaders, local authority and housing representatives and local key partners.
Operational Policing
Policing the most challenging law enforcement region in western Europe, I managed a heightened environment of exceptional risk and threat. I delivered exacting operational policing; responding to critical incidents whilst ensuring the safety of officers who must attend in significant numbers to ensure safety. I conducted serious risk assessments and management, ensuring security across a large range of local anniversaries and robust vigilance around calls for police response; seeking to establish if calls were genuine or attempts to lure officers into an attack.Unlike the wider UK policing service, all PSNI officers are armed with a personal protection weapon and are trained to recognise and manage constant threat. I was responsible for the supervision of these armed officers and the incumbent considerations required around exacting legal and ethical requirements. I exercised exceptional diplomacy and effective, adaptable, communication skills to assess risk and secure safe outcomes alongside helpful community interaction.
Operational Policing
I held various roles during this time including:Response - I ensured calls for police action were responded to promptly and that resources were properly managed. I supervised operational requirements alongside the professional development, discipline and welfare needs of my team. Prioritising successfully, I conducted risk assessments and oversaw initial investigations, this included developing intelligence driven tasking, supervising investigations and identifying lines of enquiry. Borough Crime Squad - Leading a dynamic team, I planned and delivered reactive and proactive operations, assessing and documenting all tactical options. Executing high threat warrants and conducting investigative surveillance, I implemented innovative approaches to disrupt and mitigate serious risk offending. I held responsibility for intelligence development and evidence gathering; preparing and presenting Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) applications to meet compliance with the exacting legal requirements around covert surveillance activity.
Operational Policing
Providing immediate response to critical incidents and operational activities, I processed information quickly and accurately, exercised exceptional conflict management skills and demonstrated an ability to connect with people even in the most demanding of circumstances. I served on attachment to a variety of specialist teams investigating a range of offending from acquisitive crime to vice.
