A pal asked me recently, 'Where did your 30 years at BBC Sport go?' I replied, 'Wimbledons, Open golfs, 6 Nations and Olympics (both Summer and Winter) but in reality my career just flew by. In the summer, I would direct; Queen's Tennis, Wimbledon, then golf's Scottish Open, the Open Championship and the Women's British Open. All for BBC One or Two. As the seasons changed my work would turn to rugby union's Autumn Internationals and then the 6 Nations. In some situations, the BBC did not produce the live action so I would be responsible for the BBC's commentary team. From the heat of the World Athletics Championships to the pulsating atmosphere of the velodrome at the World Track Cycling, I was responsible for producing some of the biggest names in sport's commentary. For the last four Winter Olympics, I was the BBC's curling producer, helping the British public discover, and rediscover, a love for the 'Roaring Game'. At the other end of the spectrum, I also guided many commentators, new to television, understand the demands of a live commentary. In between all this live work, I'd make documentaries.I was one of the first BBC producers to be trained to film and edit their own material making me ideal for BBC Sport's documentary unit but I did more than just gather content. Right through the entire process, from developing and pitching treatments to final delivery, I was fully involved, always relishing the contrast between my live role and the pressure of the empty page. As a producer/director, I made a name for myself specialising in getting to know the subjects of my filming which allowed me to deliver engaging footage. Over the years, I developed my script writing to such a level that some of my films even won awards.
