My approach to design leadership and regenerative design is both explorative and strategic. I work closely with clients and design teams to identify the best planning approval pathways and to explore ideas that lead to design excellence. These ideas are often centred around creating a sense of place and a contextual language, maximising human well-being and optimising a building’s environmental and commercial performance through site and floor planning and façade design. I have a particular interest in the role of outdoor spaces in the built environment, such as courtyards, atria, laneways and arcades. These in-between spaces can anchor private and community life while also providing environmental benefits such as enhancing the sites micro-climate, reducing cooling loads and offsetting urban heat island effects through additional green space. Having worked as a Design Director in Australia and the USA, UK and China over the past 30 years and being a keen researcher of building typologies has helped me to develop a design approach that considers global benchmarks and thinking. Holding degrees in both architecture and sustainable development allows me to consider the positive contribution each project can make to climate change mitigation and adaptation. I have published peer-reviewed papers on topics such as climate responsive university building design, multi-unit residential trends and the micro-climate of tall buildings.
